How To Keep Away Vultures

There are many types of Kansas City vultures, but for the purposes of this article, we are going to talk about the feathered variety. You will have to figure out Uncle Charles on your own. As scavengers, vultures play a very important part in our ecosystem. Unlike other types of birds, scavengers do not hunt living prey. They survive of the dead carcasses of other animals, and because of their very strong stomach acid, kills diseases such as rabies, anthrax and cholera that would be lethal to other animals. In addition to being scavengers, Missouri vultures are also raptors and in the same family as hawks and eagles. However, unlike hawks and eagles, vultures are very social and prefer feed and roost in large groups.

It is because of this that most people would prefer that they not roost on their Kansas City property. Maybe it is because some farmers and others think that they prey on livestock or other live prey. This is a myth. Vultures do prefer fresh meat, but they will use their excellent eyesight to spot newly dead or sick prey and fly to get to it first. When discouraging vultures from roosting on your Missouri property, there are several things that need to be taken into consideration. Some vultures are on the endangered species list, so you need to know what kind of vulture you are dealing with. Also, if they are not causing property damage, you may just want to leave them where they are, especially if it is a wooded Missouri area. Trying to move them if the area is heavily wooded is that they may roost somewhere else that would be more of a hazard, not only to the vultures, but humans as well.

However, if they are roosting on rooftops or other undesirable places, there are things that you can do. Poison is not one of them. Because of the stomach acid they produce, it would take a large quantity andwould harm other Kansas City wildlife. Shaking the trees that they are roosting in may work, if it disturbs them enough. Another way would be to make a lot of noise. If your area allows firecrackers, these would be and effective way. Be sure to check out your local Kansas City ordinances before trying this.

Finally, there is also a product on the market call The SCARECROW specifically to get rid of Kansas City vultures. It is a sprinkler system that is motion activated and shoots a stream of water. If you need to get rid of Missouri vultures, this is probably the best way to do it. Just don’t try on September 1st. That is National Vultures Day.
